Bees are fascinating creatures, but their lifespans vary enormously depending on the species. Whether you're curious about the mason bee nesting in your garden or the honeybee visiting your flowers, here's everything you need to know.
How long do solitary bees live?
Solitary bees - like mason bees and leafcutter bees - have surprisingly short adult lives. Most live for just 4-8 weeks as adults, emerging in spring or summer to mate and nest. But here's the remarkable part: they spend the other 10 or more months of their life developing inside their nest cells as eggs, larvae and pupae.
This is why a good nesting habitat matters so much. A solitary bee box provides the safe, dry tubes these bees need to lay their eggs and give the next generation the best possible start.
How long do bumblebees live?
Bumblebee workers live for around 2-6 weeks, spending their short lives foraging for pollen and nectar. The queen, however, is different - she survives the entire year. In autumn, the old queen and her colony die off, leaving only newly mated queens to hibernate through winter and start fresh colonies in spring.
How long do honeybees live?
Honeybees have the most varied lifespans of all. Worker bees live around 6 weeks in summer but can survive 4-6 months during winter when the colony clusters together to stay warm. Drones (male bees) live just 8 weeks - and are actually evicted from the hive in autumn! The queen bee is the longest-lived of all, surviving up to 5 years.
Why solitary bees matter most for your garden
Despite their short lives, solitary bees are incredibly efficient pollinators - a single red mason bee can do the work of 120 honeybees. Supporting them with a dedicated bee observation box means you're not just watching nature up close; you're actively helping UK wildlife thrive.
