Every BeeLife box ends its journey in the workshop at the finishing stage - and it's one we take just as seriously as any other part of the process.
Oak is an exceptional wood for outdoor use. It's naturally dense, resistant to moisture, and built to last. But even the toughest timber needs a little help to perform at its best through the full range of British seasons - from damp autumn mornings to the occasional summer heatwave.
We treat each box with a natural finish that feeds the wood and forms a protective barrier against moisture and UV without sealing it completely. Oak needs to breathe, and so do the bees that will eventually nest inside.
This is where we're particularly careful. Everything we use is chosen with solitary bees in mind. No harsh chemicals, no synthetic solvents, nothing that could deter or harm the very creatures the box is designed to support. Bee-safe isn't just a label for us - it's a non-negotiable part of how we work.
Once treated, each box is left to cure fully before it leaves the workshop. The result is a surface that feels warm and natural to the touch, looks beautiful in any garden setting, and is ready to weather years of outdoor life.
